Stivers Students Lead ICE Walkout with Dayton Public Schools' Support
In a powerful display of solidarity, over 200 students at Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton took a stand against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. They walked out of their seventh-period classes on Wednesday, their voices united in protest.
One of the student speakers, Chelsea Ruiz, shared a personal story that resonated with many. As the daughter of an immigrant, she emphasized the uncertainty families face each day, not knowing if they'll ever speak to their loved ones again. Ruiz's words highlighted the emotional toll of ICE's actions on families.
The students' protest was not just a display of emotion but also a call to action. They chanted and walked around the school track, their voices echoing the concerns of the community. This moment of unity was organized by Stivers senior Dawn Drake, demonstrating the power of student-led initiatives.
Dayton Public Schools' support for the protest was notable. Superintendent David Lawrence confirmed that the school principal, Paul Waller, had informed him about the event, and the school board members endorsed it. Students who wished to participate were given the option to leave school early at 2:15 p.m., allowing them to join their peers in the protest.
This action aligns with the school's previous stance. Last year, Dayton Public Schools faced a choice between federal funds and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. They chose the latter, and the Trump administration subsequently dropped its push against DEI programs.
Lawrence assured that the school values democracy and its benefits. He also acknowledged the diverse opinions within the school community, stating that parents were generally supportive, and students who faced opposition from their families were not obligated to participate.
The students' call to action was clear and inspiring. Ramah Lindsey, another student speaker, urged their peers to use their voices and platforms responsibly. Lindsey emphasized the importance of being on the right side of history, a message that resonated with many.
