Get ready for a bold move that's sure to spark debate! Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout, just 18 years old, has made a surprising choice: he's opting out of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Instead, he's setting his sights on the world under-20 championships in August, a decision that's got everyone talking.
But here's where it gets controversial: Gout and his team believe it's wiser to focus on one event, especially early in his career. They're aiming high, hoping to emulate the legendary Usain Bolt's early success.
The world under-20 championships, formerly the world junior championships, will take place in Eugene, Oregon, from August 5-9. It's the same stadium that hosted the 2022 world championships, a prestigious venue for young athletes.
Usain Bolt, the sprinting icon, began his journey with 200m gold at the 2002 world juniors. Gout, who finished second in the half-lap race at the world under-20 championships in Lima at 16, has always admired Bolt's achievements.
Gout was expected to medal in the 100m at the Commonwealth Games, so his absence is a big loss for Australia. But Petria Thomas, chef de mission for Australia's Commonwealth Games team, understands Gout's decision. She says, "Gout is an incredible talent, and while we won't see him in Glasgow, we hope he'll represent Australia at future Commonwealth Games."
Thomas adds, "He's only 18 and his career is just beginning. We respect his choice to prioritize the world under-20 championships as he prepares for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games."
Australian Athletics has also backed Gout's decision to focus on the junior championships. Gout, from Queensland, has become a global phenomenon in just two years. After breaking Peter Norman's 56-year-old 200m Australian record in 2024, he made headlines worldwide with his 2025 world championships debut and 200m semi-final appearance in Japan.
So, what do you think? Is Gout making the right call by skipping the Commonwealth Games? Or should he be aiming for both events? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
